Ward-Lambert Architectural Models is a new, young company specialising in creating unique models for architects, designers and private clients. Headed up by Matthew Ward-Lambert, the company produces beautifully-made models of buildings and landscapes, to draw viewers into the built environment and communicate the designers' intentions.
The company focuses on the use of quality materials, and how to pair these choices to best express the aesthetic intentions of a design. Using a simple palette of materials, it aims to eschew the doll house style of purely figurative modelling in favour of a more subtle, but stylish, approach. Matt typically uses tonal differences in timbers, corks and cards to communicate materiality in an understated way, but each project can be tailored to suit the client's desire for a particular material or level of representation. Each project will be approached afresh.
Matt works closely with the client to establish where their priorities lie for the model - if it is for planning purposes, a working concept model, for presentation to clients, or simply for marketing to display their design credentials as best as possible. Scale is also an important factor - this will have an impact on size, contouring, detail, population with trees etc - and can be talked through with Matthew at an early stage to establish the scope of the work.
Matt's work is handmade, so clients can be sure that their models will have been considered and crafted in great detail - not simply churned out of an automated system. This avoids the mass-produced look of so many models today, but instead imbues the model with a tactile nature that sets it apart as a fine piece of craftsmanship in itself. Matt believes that this approach pays dividends in the quality of finish, and the ability to really tailor each commission to the specific project requirements.
By taking this more considered approach, Matt can express the same sensitivities that the original architects envisaged in the actual design. With past experience in landscaping and design, he can anticipate some of the concerns or intentions that clients may have, giving a valuable insight into how to get the best from the model's design.
Whether the client knows exactly what they want from a model, or whether they need guidance and advice on the scale, detail and materials, Ward-Lambert Architectural Models is able to help. The end result will be a model that is not only beautiful, but one that is assembled with the utmost care and consideration for the final finished result.
